A house shift in India rarely goes wrong because of the movers alone. It goes wrong because someone forgot to inform the broadband company, or the child's school transfer certificate was still in a locked cupboard on packing day. A month sounds like a lot of time, but between work, family and the actual packing, it disappears fast. Here is a week-by-week checklist that Urban Relocations shares with customers booking a house shift, built from what actually trips people up.

30 to 22 days before moving day

  • Get an in-home survey done. Call two or three packers and movers and insist on a physical or video survey of your house rather than a phone estimate. This is what the final quotation should be based on.
  • Decide what you are not taking. Walk through every room and mark furniture, appliances and boxes you plan to sell, donate or discard. Fewer items means a lower volume and a lower bill.
  • Start a moving folder. Keep Aadhaar, PAN, rental agreement, school certificates, medical records and vehicle papers in one folder or a scanned drive. You will need these repeatedly over the next month.
  • Check your society's rules. Most housing societies need advance notice before a moving truck can enter, and some restrict the hours a lift can be used for shifting. Get the No Objection Certificate process started at both the old and new address.

21 to 15 days before

  • Confirm your booking in writing. Once you finalise a mover, get the quotation, inventory list and move date confirmed over email or WhatsApp, not just a verbal call.
  • Start using up perishables. Plan meals around what is already in your pantry and freezer instead of buying fresh stock.
  • Sort out utility transfers. Note down the closing dates for electricity, gas connection, broadband and DTH at the old house, and start the new connection process at the destination if you already have the address.
  • Begin packing items you don't use daily. Off-season clothes, books, decorative items and spare linen can be boxed up now without disrupting your routine.

14 to 8 days before

  • Update your address. Banks, insurance policies, mutual funds, e-commerce accounts and your employer's HR records should all reflect the new address before you move, or as close to the date as possible.
  • Arrange school transfer papers. If children are changing schools, transfer certificates and previous mark sheets take time to process. Start this early.
  • Segregate valuables. Jewellery, important documents, cash and small electronics should travel with you personally, not in the moving truck. Keep this list aside now so nothing gets packed by mistake.
  • Take photographs of furniture and electronics. A quick photo of your sofa, dining table and appliances, especially any existing scratches or dents, is useful if you need to raise a damage claim later.

7 to 3 days before

  • Pack the kitchen. This usually takes longer than people expect. Keep aside one box of daily-use utensils and crockery to be packed last.
  • Defrost the fridge. Switch off and empty the refrigerator at least 24 hours before moving day so it is dry and odour-free before transport.
  • Confirm parking and access at both ends. Call your building's security and confirm where the truck can park, whether a lift is available, and if any advance permission letter is needed.
  • Reconfirm the move with your packers and movers. Check the reporting time, team size, and vehicle details a couple of days in advance.

2 days before and moving day

  • Keep an essentials bag ready. Toiletries, a change of clothes, chargers, medicines, snacks and water for each family member, packed separately from the rest of your luggage.
  • Do a final walkthrough. Check cupboards, under beds, balconies and the loft before the truck leaves. It is easy to miss items tucked away in corners.
  • Verify the inventory list. Before loading begins, go through the inventory with the team supervisor. Do the same at unloading to confirm everything has arrived.
  • Keep small cash handy. For last-minute expenses like tea for the crew, parking charges or minor purchases, it helps to have some cash on hand.

After you reach the new house

  • Unpack the essentials box first, followed by the kitchen and bedrooms, so the house feels liveable within the first day.
  • Check furniture and appliances for transit damage and compare against the photos you took earlier. Report any issue to your mover immediately, within the time window mentioned in your agreement.
  • Register with local services such as the nearest hospital, pharmacy, grocery store and, if needed, a new gas agency.

None of this is complicated on its own. It is the sheer number of small tasks that makes a house shift stressful. A checklist like this, followed loosely rather than rigidly, keeps the last week calm instead of chaotic. Urban Relocations has been helping families move across Indian cities since 2008, and our teams are used to working around exactly these kinds of last-minute realities.
